How to Use Outdoor Fire Pits
Tuesday, May 27th, 2008If you want to make sure that you can use your garden all year long, consider outdoor fire pits. These are either stationary or are transportable objects that burn wood and can be used as an adult campfire, if you will.
Anyone who has ever sat around the campfire as a young person, knows how much fun this activity can be. Sitting around the campfire is now something you can do any time you want with outdoor fire pits. You can choose to have one built in your back yard or you can purchase one of the many portable outdoor fire pits.
In the back yard, a stationary fire pit is usually made of metal or stone. It can be firmly affixed into the ground and should have a cover to protect it from the elements. You will burn wood in this fire pit, just as you would in a fireplace. Instead of having to build a campfire, you can have your own campfire all year long!
You can even roast marshmallows or cook hot dogs over one of these fire pits, whether they are portable or stationary. Make sure that you do not use treated wood to do this as it can give off toxic gasses. You should use only fireplace wood.
Portable outdoor fire pits make excellent gifts for just about anyone. In same cases, neighbors get together to purchase portable fire pits so that they can have bonfires whenever they want. This allows people to remain outside, even when the weather is not that warm.
If you live in one of the northern states, you understand that you can only go out doors in the evenings and feel comfortable for a short time each year. If you live in an area like Chicago, for example, you get about 6 months of horrible weather, 2 months of rain and 2 months of “nice days.” If you have one of the portable fire pits, you can enjoy the outdoors a lot more often and not spend so much time being cooped up inside.
Portable fire pits are made of metal and are pretty sturdy. They have mesh around the sides to keep sparks from flying out so that people do not get burned. There is a lid that can be put on the fire pit when you want to extinguish the fire, or you can just dump sand on the fire (however, this requires more cleaning).
When using portable fire pits, be sure to use non treated wood. The heat generated by these items is amazing and will allow you to enjoy the outdoors in the early spring as well as late fall. You can even use them in the garage during the winter. If you smoke or have friends who smoke and do not want to smoke indoors, you can sit in the garage during the winter months with one of the fire pits.
Fire pits have a multitude of uses and can make being outdoors possible all year long.
