How to Use Outdoor Fire Pits

May 27th, 2008

If you want to make sure that you can use your garden all year long, consider outdoor fire pits. These are either stationary or are transportable objects that burn wood and can be used as an adult campfire, if you will.

Anyone who has ever sat around the campfire as a young person, knows how much fun this activity can be. Sitting around the campfire is now something you can do any time you want with outdoor fire pits. You can choose to have one built in your back yard or you can purchase one of the many portable outdoor fire pits.

In the back yard, a stationary fire pit is usually made of metal or stone. It can be firmly affixed into the ground and should have a cover to protect it from the elements. You will burn wood in this fire pit, just as you would in a fireplace. Instead of having to build a campfire, you can have your own campfire all year long!

You can even roast marshmallows or cook hot dogs over one of these fire pits, whether they are portable or stationary. Make sure that you do not use treated wood to do this as it can give off toxic gasses. You should use only fireplace wood.

Portable outdoor fire pits make excellent gifts for just about anyone. In same cases, neighbors get together to purchase portable fire pits so that they can have bonfires whenever they want. This allows people to remain outside, even when the weather is not that warm.

If you live in one of the northern states, you understand that you can only go out doors in the evenings and feel comfortable for a short time each year. If you live in an area like Chicago, for example, you get about 6 months of horrible weather, 2 months of rain and 2 months of “nice days.” If you have one of the portable fire pits, you can enjoy the outdoors a lot more often and not spend so much time being cooped up inside.

Portable fire pits are made of metal and are pretty sturdy. They have mesh around the sides to keep sparks from flying out so that people do not get burned. There is a lid that can be put on the fire pit when you want to extinguish the fire, or you can just dump sand on the fire (however, this requires more cleaning).

When using portable fire pits, be sure to use non treated wood. The heat generated by these items is amazing and will allow you to enjoy the outdoors in the early spring as well as late fall. You can even use them in the garage during the winter. If you smoke or have friends who smoke and do not want to smoke indoors, you can sit in the garage during the winter months with one of the fire pits.

Fire pits have a multitude of uses and can make being outdoors possible all year long.

How To Build A Potting Table in Ten Easy Steps

May 27th, 2008

If you’re a gardener you know how wonderful a potting table can be for your garden and your time spend tending to your beautiful outdoor area. If you find yourself having to hunt down your gardening tools or materials every time you want to work in your garden then you might want to think about buying a potting table or making one. If you choose to make one here are ten simple and easy steps to building your own potting table. The items and tools you will need for your new potting table are: (3) 15 cm terracotta pots (3) 30mm bolts with nuts (3) 25mm washers Paint any color you choose 4×1 timber cut into these sizes: (13) 1m lengths (11) 60 cm lengths (4) 90cm lengths (2) 32 cm lengths 2×1 timber cut into these lengths (2) 25 cm lengths (4) 4cm blocks or square shaped You will also need these tools: Electric drill Electric screwdriver Builder’s square Pencils Measuring Tape Paint Brush Now that you have all your tools follow these simple directions to building your own potting table. Step 1: Always build from the bottom up so start with the bottom shelf first. Take (2) of the 1m lengths and (8) of the 60cm lengths to construct the bottom shelf of your potting table. Drill two holes in each end of the 60 cm lengths to be able to easily insert screws. Step 2: Place the (2) lengths of 1m wood long ways and upright so you can lay the (8) lengths of 60cm across them. Separate the (8) lengths evenly and screw them into the 1m lengths to form a square. Step 3: Measure and mark each corner of your newly made square from the bottom about 20cm in. This will be used as a guide so you know where to attach the table legs. Step 4: Attach the 90cm legs securely to the first shelf you build in an upright position. These are the legs of your potting table. Step 5: Take (7) of the 1m lengths and screw those to the top of your table to form your potting table top. Then add another 1m length to the front of your table to hang down over the legs. Step 6: To give your potting table added strength turn the table over and screw in on of the 1m lengths on the under side of the table. Step 7: To build the top portion of your potting table you will need to secure the 32cm length of wood by screwing it into the back portion of your table so it forms a shelf about your table base. Attach the remaining (2) 1m lengths to finish off the back. Step 8: Drill three holes into the newly made shelf that are far apart enough to place the (3) terracotta pots side by side with a little space in between them. Thread each newly drilled hole with one of the screws. Place a pot over each one and secure it with a nut from the inside of the pot. Step 9: Now you can build the handles out of the 25cm lengths and firmly attach one on either side of the table. Step 10: You are now ready to paint your table and then add it to your beautiful garden to enjoy.

Using Garden Fountains

May 27th, 2008

If you really want to make a statement in your garden, consider garden fountains.  They are not as difficult to install as you may think.  As a matter of fact, the installation of such fountains are not difficult at all.

Many garden fountains today do not tap into water lines.  This makes for easy installation.  Instead, they are filled with water and run on electricity.  The garden fountains have a filter and pump that is very similar to what you would have in a fish tank.  The garden fountains give the illusion of constantly running water where it is really just the same water that is recycled over and over.

Years ago, garden fountains were tapped into water systems.  When the water was turned on, the fountain would run.  When the water was turned off, the fountain stopped.  Buckingham Fountain in Chicago is a perfect example of such a fountain.  It is one of the largest garden fountains in the Midwest and is owned by the City of Chicago.

Most people do not have the money of the City of Chicago and cannot afford to constantly run water in their gardens to make their gardens look attractive.  Hence, they use modern garden fountains that can give the same illusion only without wasting water.  And they are a lot easier to install than a large garden fountain that needs to be attached to the water main.

You can find garden fountains in a number of different places as they are now all the rage.  You can have statutes, angels, animals or just bubbling brooks in your garden fountains.  They are not expensive and add tremendous appeal to your garden.

One caveat to using garden fountains is that you need to actually plan where you want to install the fountain.  As it will run on electricity, you need to find out how you plan to hide the cord.  Many people who have garden fountains will run the cord under a deck or hide it among plants.  You do not want the cord to be visible as it will ruin the appearance of the garden.

Another caveat is that one garden fountain will do quite nicely in a small garden.  Two work well in a large garden.  A bunch of garden fountains all over the place looks tacky and will make your garden not look like a showplace but an eyesore.

Look for garden fountains at your local garden center or online.  Before your purchase, map out how you wish your garden to look when it is complete.  Then work towards adding the right ornaments, such as garden fountains, to the look.  This does not have to be done overnight, either.  Most gardens take years to come into full bloom (pun intended).

Planning is everything when it comes to your garden.  You can alter your plans every once in a while, but you should have an idea of what you want to put in certain places and realize that less is more.  Take a look at gardens that you admire either in magazines, books or even in your neighborhood and work out a plan before you begin.  By using garden fountains, you can have a beautiful focal point in your garden that will not waste water and will look peaceful and serene.

Outdoor Rocking Chairs - A Classic Choice in Patio Decor

May 22nd, 2008

Want to recapture a bit of the old country past? Get yourself a rocking chair, get on your porch and start rocking. They are an extremely relaxing way to while away the day and think back to how things used to be.

So what does one look for in an outdoor rocking chair? Well, they are a little more limited in materials than their indoor cousins, but that doesn’t make them any less attractive. As a matter of fact, teak, cherry, and cedar woods are the most commonly used materials in outdoor rocking chairs, and are all beautiful woods.

You will have to consider the style of outdoor rocking chair you want to have at your home. While you may think a rocking chair is a rocking chair, you couldn’t be more wrong. Some have a more southern style, often made of white wicker and flowery cushions. A more rustic one hair may be made out of tree branches and logs that still have some of the bark on them for effect. Even if you decide on a simple, and typical looking one, you still have to decide if it will be natural, painted, stained or what else will be done to the surface. And we didn’t even begin to look into which way the back slats were going, up and down, or side to side.

Comfort is extremely important in outdoor rocking chairs. Without it being comfortable you will not want to spend hour after hour rocking away on your porch. So, before laying out a lot of money on some, make sure they are going to offer the ride you are hoping for. If they are not cushioned, the seat and back should be contoured to offer a more comfortable fit for your body. If you are getting cushions on your outdoor rocking chairs, make sure they fit right. An ill fitting cushion that is sitting on top of the seat and back of outdoor rocking chairs could slide around under you and end up making you more uncomfortable than if you didn’t have them.

The other portion of this part of the equation is how the chair rocks. It needs to smoothly rock back and forth without any skips or weird spots where it may not have been properly formed. Can you lean all the way back without the chair feeling like it’s going to topple over? You should be able to. You should always feel secure in outdoor rocking chairs that you are going to stay rocking, not topple over.

When you are ready to invest in outdoor rocking chairs, you should know they are not cheap, at least the good ones. Good rocking chairs will put you back a pretty penny, but you have to realize that you are paying for quality. Hand created outdoor rocking chairs, that have attention to detail are the ones that have higher price tags, but also a longer lasting and more comfortable experience
